Our Background

In the middle of 2001 a group of people from a number of agencies already working with asylum seekers saw the need to establish a centre specifically targeted to provide the unique and immediate support that asylum seekers need.

After funding was obtained and a coordinator was appointed, the Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre (ASWC) was opened in mid 2002. Since that time, the ASWC has evolved to offer increasing services and support whilst maintaining the communal and relaxed atmosphere that makes it such a unique and special place.

The ASWC's funding comes from various community groups, philanthropic organisations and private donations. The ASWC was previously auspiced by Broadmeadows UnitingCare (since 2004), and is now a program within Lentara UnitingCare.

In November 2012, the ASWC community celebrated its 10th year anniversary. For more information about the ASWC, its programs and history, please take a look at the booklet produced to commemorate the anniversary, entitled 'Celebrating a Decade Together at the Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre'.
